I am latina but I have never celebrated Dia De Los Muertos therefore I struggled a little trying to figure out how I was going to go about doing this project. The thing I struggled with the most was figuring out who I wanted to dedicate my altar to. At first I thought I wanted to dedicate my altar to my family but thankfully I don’t have any close family members that have passed on. After thinking about who I should dedicate my altar to, I remembered a project I did last year that deeply moved me. It was on the feminicidios that have occurred in Mexico. Therefore I decided to dedicate my altar to all the girls and women who were murdered due to the feminicidios. I am catholic so it was important for me to add multiple religious figures and icons. Some of which are the Virgin Mary, San Judas Tadeo, a rosary, a cross, etc. I added San Judas Tadeo candles because he is the saint that Catholics pray to when they are going through some hardships and when they need a miracle which is what I believe Mexico needs to end these feminicidios. I also added la Virgen De Guadalupe because as a mother a lot of us Catholics believe that she always looks out for everyone but especially children and mothers. I added her as the centerpiece because she knows the struggle and the pain that these mothers whose daughters were murdered are going through. I also added the traditional altar items such as marigolds, pan de muerto, and the cups of water. I also added on the side boxes; collages of the protests and the movements that are going on and pictures of the movement that really moved me and I thought were very powerful. I added these collages as well as the hand painted crosses with some of the names of the victims of the feminicidios so that when the spirit of these girls and women come during Dia De Los Muertos they see that they are not forgotten and that we are still fighting for justice for them.
