My altar is dedicated to my abuelito Carlos. My abuelito passed away when I was in high school. I was distraught with his passing, but I was so thankful to have had a grandpa like him. He helped me give me the confidence I have today. On my altar, I decided to place many mirrors on the wall. The reason why I decided to do this was because when I was younger I did not like my reflection. Specifically, I did not like my brown skin. There were always small comments from people that made it seem like being lighter skinned was prettier or preferred. My abuelito Carlos was a person in my life who reassured me that I was beautiful. He would call me his morenita. My grandfather taught me to love myself no matter what other people said or thought. I now look at the mirror and love the skin I am in and the person within. With the mirrors I hope people can see their reflection and see that they are beautiful too. In my altar I made a tree to commemorate all those people who have made others feel like how my grandpa made me feel. Although my altar is not the traditional altar, I hope to be able to touch the hearts of many people and get my message across which is to love yourself.
