My public art project comes in the form of a drawing/poster. In the drawing, there is a black fence going across the page horizontally. Throughout the fence there are small breaks, however the middle of the fence is almost entirely broken. Out of these breaks fly out five Monarch butterflies varying in size. The Monarch butterflies appear to have additional conditions such as, being fairly small and weak or being caught in the fence, that contribute to their struggle. Despite this struggle each Monarch butterfly continues to fly up and away from the fence.
I wanted to make this piece in tribute the the Undocumented Community and their importance within our society. In addition, I wanted to make this piece to help shed light on the constant struggles the Undocumented Community faces on a daily basis. This piece is important as it contains the Monarch butterfly, which has recently been recognized as a symbol that is synonymous with Dreamers. The fence symbolizes the constant struggles and oppression Dreamers face by the American society. This piece highlights the incredible resilience migrants have to achieving their own goals and persevering through hardships.
