Brianna Brann

For my Public Art Project, I want to create a public mural that embraces unity and diversity,as it is crucial that today’s society embraces its differences as strength.

Thus, I want to create a large-scale painted mural in a local urban community in order to create a local landmark that can bring together the surrounding community. In addition to adding character and vibrancy to the local area, this mural will likely promote social cohesion and community resilience by creating a place where residents can simply gather to appreciate creativity and be together.

This mural will cover the entire wall of a community building (West Oakland Youth Center)and it will focus on the multifariousness of West Oakland (and the need to embrace this diversity).

More specifically—as depicted in the sketch at the end of this proposal—the mural will depict a sturdy tree in which the flags of the world are its leaves. The tree signifies the tight-knit community composed of residents from each and every corner of the globe. At the top, there are even butterflies with global flags on their wings, signifying old residents leaving/new residents coming, yet they are welcomed into the community. At the bottom, the simple statement, “Diversity is STRENGTH” is etched into the grass. With rainbow-colored letters on strength, the phrase promotes diversity as the first step to not just “tolerance,” but true acceptance! Regardless of one’s cultural origin, sexual orientation, or race, the community must embrace its differences and stand together in the face of adversity.

Simply put, this mural speaks on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the 21st century.Together, our differences make a strong, vibrant, and colorful community. Even in the face of intolerance and discrimination, this mural serves to remind its viewers to celebrate the differences and diversity in their community.
