When brainstorming to create my own Dia los Muertos altar the first person that came to mind in wanting to honor was my maternal nana Rachel Robles. I never had the chance to meet her as she passed before I was born, but the stories of her life have stained my memory and imagination since I can remember. I am told I am so much like her, though I only wish I could know that from experience. Not only do I wish to honor her, but the women in my family whose strength and love I feel connected to as well. My aunt Linda who passed over ten years ago from cancer, my aunt Stephanie who passed away over five years ago and lastly my great nana Margaret Smith, who I have only encountered in my dreams. These four women who live beyond their earthly lives in the stories of our family have carried on the strength of the Robles women line. I feel their feminine energy and spirit all around me and it inspires me each and every day.
I offer to these spirits dried flowers so they are reminded beauty continues to evade beyond death.
A lighted Virgin de Guadalupe novena candle to guide them home safely.
A bowl of salt so their souls may not be corrupted by earthly temptations.
To my aunt Stephanie I place your vintage perfume bottle from your collection.
To my great nana Margaret I place a bundle of cinnamon as your favorite scent.
To my Nana Rachel I place a small cactus so you are reminded of your small succulent garden. As well as a shot of tequila, an avocado for guacamole and a bottle of Valentina for a sense of spice.
To my aunt Linda I placed shells from the shores of your favorite beach at home in Hawaii so you can continue to find peace in the waves that surrounded you.
