Paulina Acosta

Cuerpecito Mío
2017

This altar was made to honor the process of understanding where my own body has been. Through oral history that my family always passes onto me, I am able to understand the struggles, desires, and love that my ancestors put their own body through (willingly/unwillingly). In a way, I am then able to understand what their stories mean to my body. My body has carried music, song, dance that comes from my grandparents’ bodies and their relationship to these art forms. My body has also carried with it the stories that these friends and family have left behind. By putting these items on display, I am displaying what hangs in my body every day, reminding me of the weight or the lift it gives me as I move through each day remembering in order to re- member. Memories, stories, and love literally move one’s body left, right; backward, forward. These are the family and friends that guide me from the other side, and always, in the end, move me forward.

Since this is my first altar, I wanted to make sure I took the chance to make it a personal one. Ask me about anything on this altar, y aprenderás adónde ha estado este cuerpecito mío.
