I will create a mural depicting the issues faced by those with disabilities in society. The mural is titled 'Together.' In the mural, those with disabilities and people without a disability are shown interacting in a common setting. In the mural, figures of people’s faces that do not show the facial appearances voice their appeals that are written in the portrait. The writings suggest the forgotten plight of the disabled. A factor that is emphasized by the faceless figures appealing to be heard and considered by society.
Despite the numerous initiatives established in most societies, people with disabilities continue to face significant challenges. It is because a majority of people still look down at individuals with disabilities; thus, developing negative attitudes towards them. Besides, some communities refrain from addressing any issues associated with human disabilities because they often perceive members of this minority group as a social burden. This detrimental social outlook of the disabled community is what encourages discrimination by the general public. My public art project will be focused on attracting society's attention to having a much-avoided conversation about the rights of people with disabilities while reassuring these individuals that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
A majority of societies tend to give a deaf ear to the plea for fair treatment of people with disabilities. However, it should not be the case. Society needs to be more receptive to this group and have a deep conversation on how to change people's negative attitudes towards them. It illustrates the importance of the chosen public art project. This project is not to change individuals' values, but rather to encourage a tolerance culture in the community. The art will involve a drawing which highlights the concept of a narrow road across a large water body with a head like images which describe the public's opinion and texts with comforting words that encourage people with disability to be optimistic about society's change of attitude.
The figures' closest to the viewer are depicted as more significant and have their mouthpieces open, reiterating that they are responsible for the written words. The wordings go down a road heading nowhere in particular but the silent waters of the ocean. It further emphasizes the difficulty of those living with disabilities who seek a platform to voice their concerns effectively. The mural will shed light on the non-governmental organizations as well as authorities that seem oblivious to the plight of those with disabilities. It will also shed light on the persistent activism and the achievements of such activism.
In contrast, the image will portray those with a disability who have been ignored and are consequently forced to attempt to make ends meet in silence. A sun shines above the group expressed in the painting to emphasize the aspect of equality. The sun shines equally on all beings regardless of physical or social stature. Disabled people are a vulnerable group that may not be in a position to express the challenges they face in society adequately.
To effectively develop my art, I will need the help of a person with a disability to create a piece that will not offend the very group is trying to assist. This project does not have a particular running period. It is because society needs to be constantly reminded about the importance of tolerance, and at the same time, members of the discriminated group need to be encouraged to be resilient. This project will be installed on various social media platforms. It is because these channels have been the primary influencer of prejudiced tendencies towards people with disabilities. Through the effective placement of this art project in social media platforms, both the general society and the prejudiced group stand to gain.
