I decided to create this public art project to speak and bring awareness to the abuse and murder of women (and girls) throughout Mexico, and all around the world. Originally, I wanted to locate this project around Mexico City’s biggest monument, The Angel of Independence, a monument that signifies the country’s law, war, justice and peace and come to show women cannot live out their lives in peace or have justice for their murders. For this short film, I decided to use Vivir Quintana’s song Canción sin Miedo Un himno Contra el Feminicidio en México, which not only speaks to feminicide, but acknowledges the work that women across Mexico are doing to avenge the deaths of their loved ones and plead AMLO “¡No olvide sus nombres, por favor, Señor Presidente!” The fact that they ask the President to remember their names and sing “Soy Claudia, soy Esther y soy Teresa / Soy Ingrid, soy Fabiola y soy Valeria / Soy la niña que subiste por la fuerza / Soy la madre que ahora llora por sus muertas” comes to show that no one is safe being a women and tries to seek the promises of Justice that their families were promised. Although the clip wasn’t necessarily a traditional “art project” and was a little more “educational” I was hoping to highlight and show how thousands of women have been killed and continue to be killed at high rates (even through COVID-19). Although this project was emotionally draining in so many aspects, I hope that people will notice just how big of an issue this is and work towards making Mexico a safer country for women and girls alike.
