For my Altar, I wanted to convey a connection between me and my ancestors through the motifs of a headstone. Normally the concept of the headstone is a grim one. It is the place in which our loved ones are laid to rest, a stone that is supposed to represent the culmination of somebody's life. I wanted to transform the headstone into a portal for communication from the deceased to me. I conveyed this through a chain representing a life span, starting in the back and then flowing through the headstone and then emerging into the world again on the other side. The shade of the blue is supposed to convey depth and how it can be associated with sadness and also happiness and growth (range of emotions). The calla lilies act as candelabras to add to the religious themes at play. I plan on lighting the inside and hanging pictures of my loved ones on the inside, so that their spirits can be eliminated outwards. The back decal I painted drawing from the motifs of the Virgin Mary’s light beam around her. I am very proud of this project and hope to use it as a vessel of communication from me to my ancestors for years to come.
