Aylin Figueroa Uribe

The way the world works is odd. I am Hispanic, but have never created or seen an actual altar. It wasn’t until I saw the movie Coco that I really understood more about this specific event. This school year started off online and it has been a very hard semester to get through. I am grateful that I chose to take this class this semester, because I was fortunate to stay home and share this moment with my family. As I was creating my altar, I was glad that I had the opportunity to do it at home with my family. I enjoyed seeing my younger siblings and parents help the altar come together overall. I really hope that this becomes something we actually do every year, because it has allowed us come closer with each other and with the rest of our family.

I immediately knew I wanted to honor both my grandmother and grandfather, because I was not able to create memories with either of them. Even though I didn’t really get to know them, I have always heard wonderful things about them both and have always felt very close to them both. They are in a better place and I believe that they should be the ones honored at the first altar my family creates together.
