Sophie Dorani

My public art project is symbolic of the women in the front lines during COVID-19. The face represents a woman and how she is the nurturer of her family at home and she is many things to people in her life. This is shown through the mask. One half shows her at home with her child, and how women go home and take care of their families. The other half of the mask says “Mother Wife Daughter Friend Cousin Sister Aunt Colleague Granddaughter Grandmother”. This is to show all the positions of women within their caregiving roles and relation to others. Behind her shows the world map. This is to resemble that, now, during COVID-19, she is expected to take care of the world and be a mother to the people who need her. SHe is a caregiver to the globe in this pandemic. This artwork is important to me because it shows the strength and power that women have within the world, that goes unnoticed and is not as celebrated in comparison to the role of men. I enjoyed making this piece because I have family who are working in hospitals and come home to their children and have to do it all over again. They have to be a mother at home and a mother at work now, and the toll it takes is severe. The size of my project is 1.6 MB and I created it using Adobe Illustrator. I drew it using vectors and type. I would like this project to be seen somewhere as a mural outside or near a hospital, drawn very large. I think it should be up for a long period of time, while people are still being treated for COVID. It will remind and pay tribute to the people within the hospitals, and serve as appreciation from patients to the doctors and nurses helping save their lives. It is a tribute to women who are risking their lives at work everyday.
