Adriana Aguilar

For my Bis Abuela Toña

This altar was created to honor and remember family members who have passed. Over the course of creating my altar, I reflected a lot about my family history and realized that although I may not have met everyone in my family tree, they are still family and are the reason why I am here.

This altar is for my Mother’s abuelita Antonia Chavez. As I talked to my Mom about her, memories arose of when I visited the rancho where she was born. I remember playing loteria with family members and having some of the best corundas in a long table full of happiness and laughter. She mentioned memories of always seeing her with her mandil and constantly cutting her nails. It was heartwarming to listen to my mom’s memories of her abuelita and honoring her together. In the process of making this Altar I have felt closer to my bisabuela and my roots within my family.
